About the Dominic M. Liddell project

What does a developer do? This project loosely tracks the daily activities of a developer as they relate to code development. Over time, we'll have a snapshot of what its like to be a developer.

What does 'loosely tracks' mean?

Not all activities are tracked and some reports may be more detailed than others. In addition, activity is reported during downtime so time-tracking has been excluded.

So what is tracked then?

Development related tasks in the following domains that represent a challenge, new skill, improved skill, knowledge gain, bug, or are otherwise noteworthy:
  • Research
  • Planning
  • Writing
  • Designing
  • Development
  • Testing
  • Code Review
  • Code Cleanup
  • Deployment/Production

When did this project start?

The first activity was tracked on 04/16/18. The most recent entry was on 07/30/19.

When will the project end?

Activity will be tracked for up to one year or until the developer gets bored too busy to update.

Will there be reporting?

Yes. Reporting will be used to answer the following questions:
  1. What percentage of work activity is spent in each domain?
  2. What skills and technologies does the developer with the most?
  3. What tasks does the developer complete most frequently?
  4. When does the developer experience downtime most often?

I still don't get the point. What's the purpose? How will the data be used?

This project most likely offers no real value or purpose to those besides the developer. It was started to answer the questions posed and nothing more.

Ever going to tell us about the developer?

How kind of you to finally ask! The Developer's name is Dominic M. Liddell. He lives in Chicago with his dog, Nala Bear. Dominic is a independent contractor who works from his home office. A full bio is coming soon! (Probably. We'll see what happens, won't we?)
